Beauty in Motion

The Kaleidoscope Collective ballerina photo shoot September 2017

Hello beautiful Kaleidoscope followers!  It’s been awhile since we have had an adventure.  Life has been busy for many of our Collective artists; however, Becci Newsome, of Clear Creative Photography had an interesting opportunity fall in her lap that we could not resist posting.  She hooked up with Erin Archambault, owner and head instructor at the Dance Mission studio in Springfield, Missouri and a handful of local ballerinas to create in motion dance shots for her advertising as well as the dancers’ personal use.  What dance mom would not love a beautiful in action shot of her child hanging in her living room?

The Kaleidoscope Collective ballerina photo shoot September 2017

Inspired by paintings of ballerinas, Becci created an almost ethereal effect by wrapping tulle around her camera lens to haze the edges of the shot.  This was by far one of the most fun shoots to watch (I’m slightly bias; however, since ballet is my favorite style of dance).  Seeing the shots Becci was able to capture out of all the moving the dancer was doing was fascinating.  This was also a great group of girls to style.  They all came to play with their own costumes; however, Becci’s own wedding dress does make an appearance.

Hair and makeup was provided by both myself, Kandice Alexander, and my intern, Abby Neighbors. We went for modern takes on the dramatic, but sometimes too polished, hair and makeup looks donned by Victorian ballerinas in paintings.

Deceptive Creatures

The Kaleidoscope Collective Halloween photo shoot October 2016

Happy Halloween!  For the third year in a row the Halloween Kaleidoscope Collective photo shoot has been the largest and most fun project.  This year I enlisted the help of two very talented young artists, Abby Neighbors and Josie Schenherr.  I have had the pleasure of working with these young up and coming artists all summer as they have been my interns on various jobs.  For Halloween I wanted to do something special so I gave each of them their own look that they could design and execute all on their own.  We also wanted to work with zippers since it can create such an amazing contrast artistically.  The result was three magical characters that represent the range of good and evil.  Shot by KC Halloween veteran Erin Gamble of Gambles Photography we proudly present Deceptive Creatures . . .

Happy Birthday America!

The Kaleidoscope Collective patriotic photo shoot July 2016

In honor of our country’s independence here is a little patriotic treat for all of you makeup fans out there.  This look was actually conceptualized two years ago but life kept getting in the way of making it happen.  I now think that was cosmic intervention because this year I met the gorgeous Gracie Prewitt-Cotten and I could not think of a better model for this shoot.

I have dabbled in facial jeweling in the past but have always wanted to do a full eye mask.  Perhaps it is my love of super heroes (which I decided to give a full nod to with the Captain America bracelet).  Each jewel was individually hand laid.  It took roughly three hours to complete the look thanks in part to the assistance from my lovely new intern, Abby Neighbors; yet another reason I believe this project was supposed to happen this year.

The Kaleidoscope Collective patriotic photo shoot July 2016

This time around photography was provided by my very best friend, Jennifer Singletary.  Jennifer is a very talented photographer and founder of the Arkansas based studio Jclare Studios.  After selling Jclare she now resides in Ozark, MO and devotes her life to saving lives as a nurse.  However, she can still be coaxed to bring the camera out by a good friend.  These beautiful photos were shot at her home.

The Zombie Apocalypse: Retro American Style

The Kaleidoscope Collective Zombie Pinup photo shoot October 2015

I’m going to make a controversial statement (especially for a makeup artist that is starting to dapple in special effects makeup) . . . I hate zombies!  I have never been partial to the culture, the movies, the lore but when I heard about the concept of mixing the zombie genre with the pinup genre I got a little excited.  Especially when I partnered up with pinup photography extraordinaire, Erin Gamble with Gambles Photography and seasoned pinup model, Baylor Cumberworth.  Suddenly the idea of pairing gore with beauty seemed like a fun challenge.  This time we enlisted the talents of local artist, Sarah Gatewood, to help conceptualize the retro 1960’s comic strip inspired makeup.  We also received a very special surprise when we were given the opportunity to shoot in an old dog food mill that is currently being renovated into Dungeons of Doom, the latest haunted attraction by Sterling Mathis owner of Springfield’s current top haunted attraction, The Hotel of Terror.  Thank you so much to him and William Rescue for giving us the tour.

The Kaleidoscope Collective Light Painting photo shoot March 2015Hey guys, its a new year for the Kaleidoscope Collective and we are starting the year off with a spectacular light show!  Erin Gamble with Gambles Photography returned with one of her specialties, light painting photography.  The beautiful light “dresses” on the models were not added in the editing process.  They were actually “drawn” on the models in the dark with a glow stick during an extended shutter capture.  The result of which is a beautifully lit colorful creation.  All of our hair and makeup looks were inspired by 80’s music, fashion, and television.

Elemental Twins

I have always been partial to all things natural and outdoorsy so when it came to picking a photo shoot theme it was an obvious choice to interpret the four elements.  I enlisted the creative power of Krista Cronin with Krista’s Beauty and Bliss as well as Erin Gamble with Gamble’s Photography for her impeccable ability to shoot on location and the project was born.  The other amazing element (pun intended) that Erin brought to the table was her knowledge of the Finley River area which provided our beautiful backdrop and . . . the twins!  Working with the beautiful and very fun Jennifer and Julie Richey was an honor.  Their identical features also provided a great uniform aesthetic.  We wanted the looks to look like the same person but creating four separate looks can be a logistical nightmare with only one model.  Having identical twins saved a lot of time. 🙂  It also helps that they were up for anything, especially Jennifer who did not complain once about lying in cool muddy water or posing close to a billowing bonfire.  They were also very patient as we glued feathers to their face, covered them in dirt, and teased their hair higher than the Bride of Frankenstein.  Thanks girls you were troopers!  Katie Harris and Katchina Autumn with Parlor 4 in Ozark, MO joined us once again and we were also joined by Ashley Honeycutt with Expressions Salon in Ozark.  Thank you to these three very talented stylists for your hair art.  We hope you enjoy our ethereal elemental creations . . .

We had a lot of fun behind the scenes on this shoot.  It was so much fun watching all of these talented women work as well as traveling to fun locations around the Finley River area.

Krista Cronin working her magic.  I am always blown away by the incredible way she uses color and design to create a character.  Check out her gallery at Krista’s Beauty and Bliss on Facebook. Her CosPlay creations are particularly beautiful.

Erin Gamble is fearless.  She will put herself in any situation to get the perfect shot.  She recently told me about sitting in a tree for hours on an island in the middle of a lake just to capture a few shots of the moment a client proposed to his girlfriend.  We may need to use those skills for a future project. 😉

We had the pleasure of working with Ashley Honeycutt on this project.  Her Fire Bride of Frankenstein-esque creation was particularly fun.

We must give a special thanks to Expressions Hair Salon in Ozark for allowing us to use their facility for all of our prep.  It is also where you can find both Krista and Ashley during their day jobs. 🙂

Not your 5 year old’s Candy Land

thekaleidoscopecollective.wordpress.com Candy Land photoshoot with makeup artists Kandice Alexander, LE and Krista Cronin, LE and photographer Becci Hutter

“What if Tim Burton made a movie about Candy Land?”  The statement that flooded myself and fellow makeup artist, Krista Cronin, with delight (as well as launched a blog).  Being huge lovers of Halloween we wanted to do something festive but not obvious.  Zombies, witches, creepy houses, and spiderweb scenes, its been done and is currently being done by everyone else this month so lets go another way.  What else is Halloween known for?  CANDY!  And what else holds whimsy like everyone’s favorite childhood board game Candy Land? . . . well except for Tim Burton movies.  Thus an idea was born.  How would those characters translate to a darker, more adult version of the bright cartoon world?  What follows is our answer. . . .

Thank you to the ever imaginative Becci Hutter with Clear Creative Photography for shooting these beautiful creatures.  All of the art direction was a collaborative effort between her, myself, and Krista Cronin.
